"Richard Thornley possesses an uncanny sense for dialogue,

body language and change of mood ... The book's

strength comes from its integrity, even more than its skill,

His courage has paid off. ATTEMPTS TO JOIN SOCIETY is an

unusually effective novel, and a treat to read."'

LITERARY REVIEW

'Thornley writes well, has a keen eye for observation and an

interesting, economical style, making him a novelist to

watch.'

BOOKS AND BOOKMEN

"ATTEMPTS TO JOIN SOCIETY more than successfully

transmits the feel of long, slow stretches of time. It is only

towards the end that you realize quite a solid world has

been cunningly built from the bits of society they try to join,

or leave: a whole intermittently glimpsed but entirely real

Vietnam-era America (with England a cold island in the

background).!

--THE NEW STATESMAN

"ATTEMPTS TO JOIN SOCIETY certainly confirms the prom-

ise of his early work,. Thornley has a commendable patience

with his characters and when this is combined with a genu-

ine story-telling ability the result is a very solid and satisfying

piece of work in the realistic mode."' THE GUARDIAN
